interesting facts about barnacles

So far in my barnacle research I have found the following interesting facts:

  1. Starting in November Semibalanus balanoides goes through a period of anecdysis (it doesn't moult) and practically hibernates, for 6-8 weeks.
  2. S. balanoides sheds its penis in the first moult of the year (springish time) and regrows it over the summer before mating in November and December.
  3. Elminius modestus Australasian native first seen in Chichester in 1945 - thought to have come over on ships during early years of second world war.

ermm that's all the interesting things I can remember from the research so far. Ok I admit I don't like barnacles all that much - let's just say if I had been Darwin I'd have rushed through them as fast as possible !!

TTFN (ta ta for now)
